It’s such a coincidence that I went to the first meeting of an art group tonight! I’m excited about the potential community. I told the other artists about your sketch group and how you all work from a theme. They liked that and thought it sounds like a fun reverse book club.
I'm so excited to hear that, Cora! I'd love to hear more about the group. How many people are in it? How do they organize it? How often do they meet?
I think having a theme can be helpful because it gives you something to draw without having to spend too much time thinking about what to draw next. It also helps people expand their practice and explore ideas outside of their comfort zone. Each member interprets the theme pretty loosely though, so we come away with something quite different. For example, the current book's theme is "Portraits" but very few of us are actually drawing faces.
In addition to our themed book (we probably do about 2 per year), group members also share anything else they've been working on throughout the week. It's so much fun. Looking forward to seeing what you sketch and paint next!
Yes, I'd love to tell you more about it and I can share more details about it when we chat next! The group is actually an offshoot of the UW outdoor adventure clubs, including the sailing one that I joined this summer. Apparently, several people in the clubs also do art in different media. Yesterday was just the first meeting where the group is just forming and deciding the structure. It will be interesting to see how it goes and to try to create art that expresses my experience in the sailing club.
This is beautiful! Thanks so much for sharing.
makes me smile!
we are better together
In every way!
I love the style you have here with rough sketches combined with words, the way it all goes together.
